has been retaliating today. at least 130 rockets fired from gaza into israeli cities. about 50 of those rockets were intercepted by israel's homemade antimissile defense system, the iron dome, but one did get through. it hit the israeli town and killed three israeli citizens, and now israel is using that, of course, to threaten more attacks. the southern commander of the israeli army said that the assassination yesterday of ahmed jabbaarie, which kicked all this off, the militant leader, he says is just the beginning. meanwhile, israeli troops are gathering on the edge of gaza. tanks have been reported moving south. a ground invasion is possible. it's definitely not what israel wants, but israel's defense minister ehud barak said this morning that israel would do anything, and he repeated, anything at all, to stop the rockets to make israel's southern cities safe. martin fletcher, nbc news, tel aviv. >> martin, thanks so much. >>> nbc meteorologist bill karins is here with your weather channel forecast. good morning to you, bill. >> good morning. one more quiet day, then a stor

of the long range rockets which can target cities as far north as tel aviv. there is one report from gaza that the palestinians had fired a rocket at tel aviv but there is no confirmation of that. there was no news of it landing. one missile did get to the anti-rocket defense system and killed three israelis who apparently did not obey instructions to seek shelter but were looking at the action from their balcony. the army is telling everybody in israel, do what you're told and then you'll stay safe. inside gaza, at least 13 palestinians have been killed, 100 wounded. israel is continuing the attacks not only from the air by the way but also from ships at sea. israeli troops are also poised on the edge of gaza and reserves are being called up, too, in case the operation becomes bigger and israel launches a ground invasion of gaza which israel says they do not. hamas does not want. but it is certainly a situation. >> martin fletcher there live in tel aviv. thanks so much. >>> nbc meteorologist bill karins is tracking your weather. he has your forecast. good morning you to, bill. >> i'm all

such attack on that city in more than 20 years. it is and has been a red line for israel and now it's been crossed. israeli troops are on the move. a top defense official called up more reservists ahead of what may become a ground war. we have video that shows trucks carrying tanks and other armored vehicles moving toward the border with the gaza. the israeli army reports it may draft as many as 30,000 troops for a possible ground invasion. tonight militants in gaza fired an estimated 200 rockets at israel. three of them reportedly targeting tel aviv. that city's metropolitan area is home to more than a million people, roughly the size of the entire dallas metroplex. the missiles triggered air sirens as panicked citizens ran for cover. tel aviv is only about 40 miles from the gaza. earlier today, fox's leeland vittert was on the ground in a town along the gaza border. >> we've got more missiles coming in. you can see everyone running. this is right now the very safest place. we're going to come in under here and now we wait. those awful seconds that everyone in this part of the world knows

past the hour. welcome back to "early start." president obama travels to new york city today for an up close look at what superstorm sandy left behind. the president will survey the damage and talk with residents of staten island, one of the hardest hit areas of the city. it's his second tour of the new jersey devastation. he visited the new jersey coast with governor chris christie just days after the storm. mayor bloomberg turned down the offer he made to assess the storm damage then. victor bloomberg is live in staten island. good morning to you. what is the president hoping to accomplish there today? >> good morning, zoraida. the mission is two-fold, to come and speak with the people who have lost someone or something in this storm. remember, of the 43 deaths across the city of new york, more than half of them on staten island. if they have not lost someone, they've likely lost something. much like the store behind me, completely decimated by the storm. he'll speak sw local officials about recovery and believe me, there's a lot of work to do. it seems like this sporadically across

that a single city or state or even a region is unable to adequately address in the leadup to a disaster where there is warning or in the immediate aftermath of that, the necessary resources to assist and to recover, and so as a nation we need some mechanism to gather together all of the strength of this incredible country we call america and apply that strength to those that have been so severely harmed by that disaster. and that's occurring. fema has clearly been significantly improved in the last four years and certainly since the tragedies of new orleans, but there's much more that needs to be done, and as a country, as representatives of the american people, people who may be in any part of this country and at any moment could be affected by a disaster, we need to make sure that there is a national response capability in place ready to act with the sufficient resources. that's not just organizational, administrative issue. that's also the necessary funds available. shortchanging that money that we set aside for those disasters can lead to a period of time in which inaction is inevitable,

are isolated because the roads are swamped. the city of venice is slowly returning to normal after a weekend deluge. here is the report on the flooding throughout italy. >> it seems there is no end in sight to the gushing water. in this part of italy, towns have become inundated, bringing life to a standstill. this is the seaside town. in summer tourists normally flock here in the thousands. now, people are doing everything they can to get out. roads and recreation grounds are submerged in brown, soupy water. and in some warts of this region the only way to get around is by boat. elsewhere, it is just not safe at all. the area affected is just north of rome. here it has been raining for days. the bad weather has swept across italy. in venice, seasonal flooding was higher and more widespread than normal. and unless you were in a gondola, there was little way to stay dry. there the floods are receding. but it is now the waterlogged regions of tuscana and brea that are baring the brunt. rockets that hamas has that threatened the central cities. the two sides on the edge of a war. we don't know how this is going to play out. >> that continues to play out this morning. martin fletcher, live from tel aviv. >>> nbc meteorologist bill karins is here for a check of your weather center forecast. yesterday you said a lot about the storm you were tracking next week. >> it was borderline if it was going to affect areas hit by sandy. trends are off shore. things are looking nice as we approach the holidays next weekend. let's talk about what's happened out there. i mentioned that there was an amazing northern lights show going on. this is a picture from the top of mount washington. one of the highest spots in new england. 6,000 feet in new hampshire. there's a weather observatory where they do 24 hour weather observations and they have these amazing images of the northern lights. it was a great show from michigan all the way through vermont and maine. this image captured it well. as far as what's going on out there, not much. nice quiet weather period across the country. anothe
